The WJBC Spirit of McLean County Award was first presented in 1977. Station staff, aware that there were many awards presented by community organizations each year, believed that there was no single award that covered all of the ground when it came to the betterment of life in McLean County. The award was presented at the Association of Commerce and Industry Banquet for the first time that year. In 2000, this award was presented to Don Munson, who was retiring after a 35-year career as WJBC's morning host. The award was renamed in his honor that year.
